There is a moment that stops a lot of women from buying a bold floral maxi. You love it on the hanger, you love it in the photograph, and then a small voice asks: but where would I wear it, and will it wear me?
It is a fair question. A large-scale print does something a plain dress never does — it announces itself before you have said a word. Handled badly, it can look like fancy dress. Handled well, it is the easiest kind of elegance there is, because the dress has already done the work and everything else can be quiet.

The principle: the print is the outfit
A large floral print is a complete visual statement. Your accessories are not there to add interest — there is already plenty — they are there to hold the look together and get out of the way.
In practice this means three things. Keep the shoe simple and skin-toned or white. Keep the jewellery to one warm metal, ideally gold. And carry something small. A large bag competes with the skirt for volume, and volume is what makes this silhouette work.
1. Minimalist sandals and gold hoops
This is the styling we would put on the mannequin. A fine strappy sandal in nude or white, a pair of gold hoops, and nothing else. No necklace — the straight strapless neckline is a clean line and it should stay clean.
Because the bodice is ruched and fitted and the skirt is enormous, the proportion is already dramatic. Adding a belt, a bag with a chain, or a layered necklace is where it tips from striking into busy.
Wear it to: a summer wedding, a garden party, an evening on a warm terrace.
2. Resort-chic, for the daytime version
Swap the heel for a flat leather slide, sweep the hair back, wear little to no jewellery. The same dress reads completely differently — less occasion, more holiday.

3. As a wedding guest
Bold florals are among the safest things a guest can wear, and one of the few ways to stand out without ever risking the bride's territory. The print does the standing out for you.
One note of care: the ground of this dress is white, and the print carries it. In most rooms and most photographs it reads unmistakably as raspberry or as cobalt, not as a white dress. But if the wedding is small, or the dress code is strict, the raspberry colourway is the safer of the two — the magenta covers more of the ground and reads bolder from a distance.
Take a wrap or a fine knit for the evening. A cotton dress that is perfect at four o'clock can be cold by nine, particularly if the reception moves outside.
4. Managing the split and the bubble hem
Two design details do most of the work in this dress, and both reward a little forethought.
The front leg split is generous. It is beautiful when you walk and it behaves perfectly well when you stand, but it is worth sitting down in front of a mirror before the day so you know exactly how it falls. Most people find they want to sit with the skirt gathered slightly to one side, as below — the fullness of the skirt does the covering for you.
The asymmetrical bubble hem is what makes the silhouette modern rather than bridesmaid-ish, but it means the hem sits at different heights around you. Do not have it taken up without seeing it on with the shoes you plan to wear — the shape depends on that hemline being left alone.
5. Choosing your colourway
The raspberry is the warmer and more forgiving of the two. Magenta against white flatters most skin tones, photographs beautifully in low evening light, and works from May right through to an early autumn wedding.
The cobalt blue is the cooler, sharper choice — more graphic, more Mediterranean, more of a statement in a room full of pastels. Just restocked, and now available in XL as well.
The back
Worth seeing before you buy, because a strapless dress lives or dies on it. The ruching continues around the back of the bodice rather than stopping at the side seams, and the skirt gathers from a dropped waist — which is what gives the silhouette its fullness without adding bulk at the hip. The closure is a concealed zip with a hook and eye at the top.

- Fit: true to size, with a tailored bodice. Take your normal size.
- Model: wears a size S and is 175cm tall.
- Fabric: 100% cotton, fully lined.
- Closure: zip with hook and eye at the back.
- Care: cotton creases — hang it in a steamy bathroom rather than pressing the printed areas directly with a hot iron.
A strapless ruched bodice has less give than an elasticated one. If you are between sizes, size up; the ruching will take in the difference far more gracefully than a tight bodice will let out.
